Man in a Red Suit

Man in a Red Suit / oil on canvas panel / 16 x 12
Close up

My husband and I are unexpectedly traveling and spending time in California for family reasons. We will be here a bit over two weeks and I decided to bring my plein air painting supplies along with me. This morning I set myself up in the hotel room and found some time to paint. It's a little awkward and cramped but so far, is working out fine. The weather has been rain, rain and more rain - good for California and good for staying inside and experimenting in oil paint!

  1. Not a typical Smolensky, there's a sort of relaxed look to the red suited man that you've captured. He seems to invite questions, I reckon he's a salesman.

I spent so much time in hotel rooms, when I was an aviator, in which I taught myself to program computers and a diversity of other things - but I never got to paint in one. but I might yet!!

    1. Hi, John, my hotel set up is pretty good but the light is terrible. That is where I am having difficulty!

  2. I'd love to know where and when you saw the reference for this painting. It is just delightful! Love the man's body language and how you broke up the space in the background. Wonderful light and shadows. He looks like a delightful person!

  3. Susan, your red-suited man is brilliant! I don't know if this will come out well, but I can see in him all those hours in life-drawing classes were time extremely well spent!!! Beautiful work!!!

    1. I am finding the light to be a definite drawback to hotel room painting! I can't wait to get home and back to my well lit studio!

  6. That's a wonderful and quite large painting for a hotel room studio. The touches of cool light - especially on his glasses, shirt, and side wall made this painting special for me. Looking forward to seeing what you do when the rain stops!

    1. We are here because my husband had a major surgery at Stanford Hospital last week. I am really focused on caring for him so don't think I will get any real plein air painting in. But the plein air set up with my Julian easel has been invaluable. Thanks for the kind words, Julie.

    2. I only just got back to read your comment and what a shock to read about your husband. By now I hope he will be on the road to recovery. it is an emotional time for you.
My husband has had a bout with a bronchial infection for two weeks and for a couple of days he was in real trouble. Scary.
      Fine now.

    1. They certainly are cramped - find I can paint just about anywhere as long as I have the paint, some brushes and a few canvases!

  10. Re- bonjour !

Captivantes et intéressantes les couleurs du costume de cet homme !... Il ne doit pas être évident de s'approprier les lieux pour peindre. Mais bravo !! tu es très talentueuse.

    Gros bisous
